French Medal of Honor

On Saturday, February 21, Alpine Way resident Charlie Hallin, 92, received the French Medal of Honor in a ceremony held at Alpine Way. The Medal was presented by Mr. Jack Cowan, Honorary Consul of France of Washington. About 100 people attended. Charlie was a member of U.S. Army’s elite 736th Tank Battalion Medium Special. The 736th Tank Battalion received five battle stars. Hallin fought in all five, including the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Charlie served under General Patton.
At the ceremony, an interesting twist of fate happened when a woman from Holland came up to Charlie to thank him. She said the Dutch people would never forget. Curiously, a Dutch family with a little girl allowed Charlie to stay with them. Charlie still corresponds with the little girl, now grown, today.
